Winter expected to return to the UK and Western Europe by Sarah Wilmshurst

Over the past few days the UK has seen a mild and settled spell of weather caused by an area of high pressure which has moved in from the Atlantic bringing mild westerly winds.

Despite there being a lot of cloud cover, temperatures have reached 15 and 16C (59 – 61F) quite widely across England and Wales. As the high moves closer to the UK, temperatures tomorrow could reach 18C (64F) in London and the Home Counties, especially if any sunshine breaks through the clouds.

By Friday a developing low pressure system to the north of the UK will introduce a blast of cold arctic air down from the north across the country for the coming weekend. Over the weekend temperatures across the UK will typically be between 5 and 8C (41 - 46F), with it feeling even colder in the strong winds. Snow showers are forecast for much of the country on Sunday, more especially across the north and east.

This plume of cold air will continue southwards to affect France and Spain this weekend and into the start of next week.
