Storms lash Texas as California experiences its driest 12 months for 130 years by Steph Ball
Two different extremes of weather are being felt across America at the moment as Texas is hit by heavy rain and flooding while California is experiencing its worst drought in 130 years.
Storms have been lashing Texas over the past 11 days, killing eleven people and leaving hundreds homeless. One of the worst hit areas, Anderson County recorded just over 500mm of rain in a 60 hour period. As evacuees begin to return to their homes, officials are keeping a close eye on the Brazos River, which is expected to swell further over the next few days.
In California, residents are in the midst of severe drought which has led to the cancellation of the 4th July fireworks in fear of sparking wildfires. Just over 80mm of rain has fallen in downtown Los Angeles over the last 12 months, 300mm less than the normal yearly average.
Residents across both sides of the US are in for little respite over the next week with more heavy rain forecast for Texas, while the Californian drought is expected to continue into early September.
