Severe weather continues across the Midwest by Sarah Wilmshurst

Over the weekend a strong storm system travelled across Texas and Louisiana causing widespread flooding and damage. Yesterday this same storm system travelled northwards, and bore down on Colorado and Oklahoma.

Several roads were closed in northwest Oklahoma County due to high water, with Pawhuska in the north of the state receiving 3.88 inches of rain (9.7cm) in 24 hours. A tornado also touched down in the region, toppling many electricity poles and destroying numerous homes. Further west, heavy snow across parts of Colorado resulted in over 400 flights being cancelled from the states busiest airport; O’Hare International.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service are keeping an eye on a Pacific storm system which looks set to move into California during the week. The storm is expected to bring heavy rain to the Ohio River Valley, renewing the threat of flooding from the southern plains to the Midwest.
