The heatwave continues in Perth by Darren Bett

A heatwave continues to grip Western Australia with temperatures remaining above the seasonal average. For the past week temperatures have stayed higher than normal in Perth, the peak of the hot spell was recorded on Tuesday 30th December 2008 with a maximum of 39C, 11 degrees above normal.

The hot weather has been caused by a slow moving area of high pressure running across the Great Australian Bight. This has brought hot easterly winds and the high temperatures from the desert interior.

The New Year has started where last year left off, with temperatures soaring to the mid thirties on New Year’s Day. Temperatures are forecast to stay above normal on Friday the 2nd January 2009, but as the winds turn to the south or southwest the humidity is expected to increase making it feel oppressive. It is expected to remain very hot throughout the weekend and well into next week to with no end in sight to the heatwave.
