This small country was, until quite recently, a Portuguese colony. It is situated on the west coast of Africa at about 12°N. In area it is a little larger than Israel.

It has a climate similar to that of southern Senegal, which it borders on the north, and northern Guinea, which it borders on the south.

The description of the climate and weather of Senegal are equally appropriate for Guinea-Bissau and the climatic tables for Dakar and Banjul give a good idea of conditions around the year. Being farther south than most of Senegal, its annual rainfall is marginally greater.
