WeatherWise - Living with the Weather - Surroundings

People wear less clothes in tropical areas Clothes and Weather

Different clothes are worn in different parts of the world according to traditions, customs and the weather and climate. People wear clothes suited to the climate they live in and often the traditional clothing has evolved to protect you from specific aspects of local weather.

Amazing Differences

In hot places like the Middle East people wear long cool robes specially folded to trap cool air. White clothes reflect the heat and dark clothes absorb it but let less UV rays through so both colours are often seen. Turbans and veils are worn in the desert as protection against the sun and sand. Often open sandals or flip flops can be worn all year rather than closed shoes which would be too hot. Europeans have sometimes developed special clothing in response to the heat of other countries. For example the French Foreign Legion traditionally wear a peaked cap with flaps of material hanging over the ears and neck to protect the soldiers from sunburn.

In cold places, animal skins and fur are often traditionally worn. Fur traps a layer of warm air and keeps the heat in. Skins are also wind and water proof if treated with oil.
