Protecting Ourselves
We can protect ourselves from most of the less extreme effects of weather by using hats, umbrellas, warm clothing and sunscreen to protect us from rain, cold and sun. However, some weather events need special care to ensure you don't get hurt by the weather.
Protection from Severe Weather
When there is a storm you should take care not to get injured by lightning. To lessen the risk you should avoid wide open spaces and tall or isolated trees or poles. Put down any metal object or umbrella and ideally keep your feet together and crouch low with hands on your knees. Ideally you should get inside a building or shelter in your car with the windows and doors closed.
In some countries you have tornadoes and hurricanes to worry about. The American National Weather Service gives advice on how to protect yourself and your home from tornadoes and hurricanes which are both common in some areas.
