Public becomes aware that burning fossil fuels could lead to global warming.

The 'Burns Day Storm' left 47 people dead across Britain and was in many ways worse than the 1987 storm, affecting a greater area of the country. More people were killed because it struck during the daytime. Between 3 and 5 million trees were thought to have been destroyed, and the storm was followed by a month of atrocious weather with frequent gales, sleet, snow and ice and torrential rain.
26 Feb 1990
High winds combined with high tides to breach the sea wall at Towyn, North Wales, flooding the town. Hundred of people lost their homes to the floodwaters.

The highest air temperature officially recorded in Britain: 37.1ºC (98.8ºF) at Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.
