Key Dates in UK Weather History

Summer 1912
The wettest summer with 404 mm (15.9 in) of rain.

9-10 July 1923
In a massive thunderstorm, 6,924 flashes of lightning were recorded in 6 hours over London.

23 Aug 1935
5.1 mm (0.2 in) of rain fell in one minute at Croydon Airport, Surrey - the highest ever 'extreme of point' rainfall.

Winter 1935
The UK's mildest winters were in 1975 and 1935 where the average temperature was 6.6 ºC (43.8 ºF).

Winter 1947
The second coldest recorded winter was when Britain was still struggling to recover from the shortages of wartime. Coal supplies to power stations were held up on the frozen railways and electricity restrictions were imposed with domestic supplies being cut off for up to five hours a day. Unemployment reached 2 million and production fell by 25 per cent as the effects on industry took hold.

28 July 1948
The warmest night ever recorded in Britain: 23ºC (73.4ºF) in London.

15 Aug 1952
Over 228 mm (9 in) of rain fell in a few hours, flooding the North Devon town of Lynmouth. The floods triggered by the rain caused 34 deaths and destroyed the town.
