WeatherWise - Jobs in Weather

Storms can block roads when trees are blown down Who Employs Meteorologists?

Many UK meteorologists work at the Met Office, a government institution involved in research, applied and operational meteorology. Its headquarters are in Exeter, but there are many other sites at home and overseas.

There also exist some opportunities to work with British companies operating meteorological offices abroad. Other government or quasi-government departments employ meteorologists. The Natural Environment Research Council employs meteorologists in its oceanographic and hydrological institutes, as do the agricultural and fisheries institutes, the British Antarctic Survey and various United Nations technical aid programmes.

Commercial service industries, supplying gas, electricity, oil and water, employ meteorologists as do instrument manufacturers and environmental consultancies.

Universities and other educational institutions provide a few openings where teaching and fundamental research are carried out in an academic environment.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and other broadcasters also employ meteorologists with specific broadcasting and presentation skills to prepare and present weather forecasts, on a variety of media, to the public.
