Rising air currents called thermals in storm clouds can delay the fall of a parachutist. On July 26, 1959, an American pilot ejected from his plane at 14,000 m (47,000 ft) and took 40 minutes to fall through a thunder cloud instead of the expected 11 minutes.
Reports of ball lightning, sometimes known by its German name, Kugelblitz, have been made throughout history, often by people who were previously unaware of its existence. It is reported to either hang suspended in the air or float eerily through it until it fades or explodes.
