Winds blow anti-clockwise in hurricanes north of the equator, but clockwise in the south. Hurricanes can cause a huge amount of heavy rainfall. One hurricane deposited enough rain on Baquio in the Philippines to cover the entire island in 1 metre (3 feet) of water.
An Australian, Clement Wragge, started the naming of hurricanes in the early 1900s. He chose names of people he didn't like, especially politicians, but used women's names for the worst ones! Nowadays the names alternate between male and female names and lists of names are drawn up several years in advance for each of the world's hurricane regions.
Typhoon, the name given to hurricanes in the China seas, is thought to be derived from the Chinese tai fung, meaning "wind which strikes", but it is also possible that the word originated from the Greek monster Typhoeus, the father of storm winds. |
