Summary

It was a largely quiet November at first with high pressure over or near Wales during the first two weeks. However, later in the month it slowly became more unsettled bringing some locally heavy rain at times.

Diary of Highlights

1st to 7th
Pressure remained fairly high and mostly dry throughout this period with some overnight fog developing, especially over eastern parts, but daytime temperatures were quite high for the time of the year with 18.0 °C on 1st and 16.6 °C on 2nd, both at Betws-Y-Coed (Conwy).

8th to 14th
A slightly more unsettled spell of weather with weakening fronts followed by showers spreading south at times, with north to north-west winds quite frequent in this period. Rainfall amounts through this period were generally small, but 12.2 mm was recorded at Aberdaron (Gwynedd) on the 14th. Although temperatures were near or a little above normal during this period, a sharp frost occurred on the night of the 11/12th with a temperature of -5.7 °C at Sennybridge (Powys).

15th to 17th
High pressure returned around mid-month, and it became dry again, but fog became a problem, especially over eastern parts and sharp frosts occurred with the temperature falling to -6.4 °C at Sennybridge overnight on 15/16th.

18th to 23rd
Low pressure became predominant, often centred to the south or south-west and initially as this unsettled weather clashed with the colder air, rain turned to snow over eastern and central parts of Wales overnight on 18/19th, with 8 cm being recorded at Sennybridge. The next few days saw further rain or showers, often heavy and thundery, particularly in southern parts.

24th to 30th
A cold start on the 24th but milder Atlantic air soon moved in from the west. Only small amounts of rain generally at first, but more significant rain spread in on the 28th with 30.4 mm being recorded at Capel Curig (Conwy). The last two days of the month saw further rain, heavy at times, and it became quite windy.
