Diary of Highlights

1st to 6th
Bright or sunny for much of the day in the north-west on the 1st. Rain, occasionally thundery, reached the eastern Borders around midday, making steady progress north and west through the afternoon, evening and overnight.

This rain finally cleared Shetland during the morning of the 2nd where it remained misty all day. Elsewhere on the 2nd, overnight low cloud and mist lifted and broke to allow some sunshine, the best of which was found across the west.

Rain spread northwards through the 3rd and became confined to Aberdeenshire and the Northern Isles through the evening, with brighter or sunnier weather following from the south-west. The maximum temperature ranged from 11.8 °C in misty Fair Isle to 19 °C in sunny West Freugh (Dumfries & Galloway).

Rain in the north-east cleared through the early hours of the 4th to leave a largely dry and bright day, although Shetland remained cloudy with outbreaks of rain and fog patches.

Western areas saw a rather cloudy day on the 5th with outbreaks of rain, heavy and thundery in the south-west during the evening, but further east it was largely dry with sunny spells.

Outbreaks of mostly light rain affecting the Isles and the east coast cleared away through the morning of the 6th but the east coast remained rather cloudy with some mist, while sunny spells developed across western and central areas along with a few heavy showers.

7th to 9th
A mainly dry and bright day on the 7th with good sunny spells, with the temperatures reaching 23.2 °C at Achnagart (Highland). However, haar affected some North Sea coasts and rain reached the Western Isles by midnight.

A rather cloudy start on the 8th with a little patchy light rain and drizzle. Bright and sunny spells then developed widely, feeling warm in the sunshine. A little rain over the north-west on the 9th, but mainly dry and warm or very warm.

The best of the brightness in the east, with Fyvie Castle (Aberdeenshire) recording a temperature of 23.9 °C.

10th to 20th
Sunny intervals and scattered showers on the 10th, 11th and 12th. It remained showery on the 13th and 14th, with showers falling as snow over the mountains.

The 15th was bright with sunny spells and scattered showers. After a cold start on the 16th, the south and east were mainly dry with some sunshine, while cloud and rain spread to the northwest.

Braemar recorded a minimum temperature of 0.1 °C overnight on the 15th/16th. This rain lasted well into the 17th with some spreading to the south and east, followed by sunshine and locally thundery showers.

The 18th was also bright with showers, heaviest in the north-west, with some longer spells of rain reaching the south-west and Borders later. Sunshine and showers (some thundery) for the 19th and 20th.

21st to 30th
Bright or sunny intervals with scattered showers at first on the 21st but becoming cloudier with rain, heavy at times, spreading up from the south-west. Dundrennan (Dumfries & Galloway) recorded 53.2 mm over a 24 hour period.

Windy with showers or longer outbreaks or rain on the 22nd, some of the showers thundery across the north-east. Back to sunny spells and scattered showers for the 23rd. The showers were mainly in the north and north-east, with the south mainly dry.

The 24th dawned fine but chilly, with a touch of frost in the Highlands, with Tulloch Bridge recording a minimum temperature of -2.3 °C.

Cloud and rain however gradually spread in from the south-west during the day. The 25th saw rain move north-east across the country, this becoming confined to the far north-east during the evening with brighter weather and scattered showers following.

On the 26th rain affected the far north for a time with showers developing elsewhere, with some localised torrential downpours reported near the southern Borders.

The 27th was dry at first but some rain moved in from the south-west later. Isolated heavy thundery outbreaks developed close to the border during the evening.

Cloudy at first on the 28th with rain, this moved north followed by a few showers. Sunny intervals and isolated showers on the 29th. Dry for much of the 30th, but rain pushed in from the west later.
