Weather News by John Hammond

Most places had a sunny summer Sunday, but it was all about to change.

The night was fine and dry across the bulk of the country. Clear skies predominated, and this allowed the daytime heat to escape quite quickly. Indeed it turned quite chilly through the early hours, with Benson in Oxfordshire recording the lowest temperature with 2 Celsius (36F).

In contrast to these clear conditions, eastern Scotland and northeastern coasts of England were plagued by mist and low cloud. This rolled in from the North Sea and was thick enough to produce some patchy drizzle at times. This, together with some earlier showers, made Boulmer in Northumberland the wettest place with 3.6mm of rain. These grey conditions were set to dog the northeast for much of the day.

However Sunday dawned sunny in most other parts of the UK. There was barely a cloud in the sky in a large clear swathe from western Scotland, through Northern Ireland and across most of England and Wales. Tiree in the Inner Hebrides topped the list with 16 hours of sunshine.

There was a noticeable easterly breeze, especially across the south, but sheltered spots turned very warm indeed. Jersey in the Channel Islands was the hottest place in the land with 28 Celsius (82F).

Sadly it was a very different world in northeastern Scotland, where that stubborn misty low cloud restricted the temperature to a ‘high’ of 13 Celsius (55F) at Sella Ness in Shetland.

However it was to the other end of the country where a change was afoot. Thickening cloud invaded the southwest of England through the afternoon, with heavy and thundery rain arriving by early evening.

The wet weather was set to sweep across the rest of southern Britain overnight, promising a very different start to the new week for many of us.
