Weather News by John Hammond

The weather must have forgotten what day it was because, for a change, it improved as we started the weekend.

Most of us had seen rain during the course of Friday. Indeed heavy evening rain made Hunstanton in Norfolk the wettest place in the 24 hours until 7pm Saturday, with 27.1mm of rain. The front responsible continued northwards overnight to bring wet weather through a large swathe of Scotland.

However the far northeast stayed dry and south of the border it also became fine. A few mist patches formed as it turned quite chilly for late June. By dawn the lowest temperature was 2 Celsius at Katesbridge in County Down

The sun soon warmed things up across most of the country, though, and it turned into a fine day nearly everywhere, including Wimbledon. There was plenty of sunshine to be enjoyed, with Torquay topping the list with 15 hours of sunshine.

Temperatures inland comfortably rose into the low twenties, with Central London reaching the highest at 24 Celsius (75F). However sea breezes kept some beaches noticeably cooler.

Some northeastern coasts were notably grey and misty for much of the day, and here it stayed much cooler. Fair Isle (between Orkney and Shetland) only reached 13 Celsius (55F).

The cloud remained thick enough across other parts of Scotland for some further rain for a time, although this tended to break up into a scattering of showers by the afternoon, most notably across the southern Uplands. The odd shower also affected some northern counties of England

Most of the country had a bright summer’s evening, with the prospect of some more sunshine to come on Sunday. However the new week looked set to bring a big change.
