Summary of UK Weather for Saturday 09 August 2008. Much of the UK remained dry during the early hours of the morning with clear spells in the east but cloud was increasing across the west. Locally heavy rain was however spreading in across Northern Ireland and this rain reached western parts of the UK towards the end of the night. Thick cloud and locally heavy rain then continued to spread eastwards across the rest of the UK through the morning whilst Northern Ireland became drier. There were some drier spells at times during the afternoon, especially for parts of Scotland and northern England. However, as the afternoon another pulse of heavy rain spread in from the south-west bringing some heavy downpours to many areas, especially central and southern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This then continued north-eastwards across northern England and Scotland during the evening, with heavy downpours lingering across Northern Ireland with some very high rainfall totals here. The rain became lighter and patchier across the southern half of the UK during the evening. Feeling rather cool in the rain with temperatures generally around or below average. Also very windy, esecially around western and southern coasts with gusts over 40-50mph.
