Snowsports Overview
Light snowfall has been reported at Kaprun and Hintertux in Austria and more snow could land this weekend.
Saas Fee in Switzerland has also received new snow this week and it was possible to ski there in Thursday.
Val Senales in Italy is also skiing really well following 10cm of fresh snow landing on Tuesday.
Unfortunately more wet weather is expected at Whistler in Canada. The conditions were drier at Timberline in America and it was possible to ski there on Thursday. However, wet weather is expected over the weekend.
All of our reported Australian and New Zealand resorts now open for snowsports. Fresh snow has fallen this week at almost all of the New Zealand resorts and the riding is superb for this time of year.
Cerro Catedral and Chapelco in Argentina have also received more fresh snow since last weekend.
Argentina
Snow fell during the week at Cerro Catedral (8/85cm) and Chapelco (10/45cm) whereas Las Lenas (85/110cm) has not received any fresh snow since Monday.
Conditions have improved at Cerro Catedral and the resort is now reporting powder conditions on the upper pistes and pockets of untracked powder can be found in the back country.
The depths are still shallow in places so it is essential to take care as unmarked hazards exist.
At Chapelco the recent fresh snow has packed down. It is best to stick to the upper area as lower down the cover is limited.
Fresh snow is forecast for Cerro Catedral and Chapelco over the weekend. Las Lenas will have bright and sunny weather.
Australia
All of the resorts that the Ski Club reports on in Australia are now open for snowsports.
Ben Lomond (10cm) opened this week and has limited skiing available. There is one lift open which is the Summit, but more snow is needed before they open more of the ski area.
Good conditions can be found at all of the other open ski resorts. The temperatures have fallen this week across the ski areas and the snow has packed down.
The lower temperatures at Thredbo (5/72cm) enabled the snow cannons to run on Wednesday night so the firm base has a cover of fresh man made snow.
Sunny conditions are going to continue into Friday. After this cloudy skies will develop and snow is forecast for the weekend.
Austria
Dustings of snow have fallen at Kaprun (296cm) and Hintertux (225cm), which has freshened up conditions at both resorts.
Following the recent light snowfall at both Kaprun and Hintertux the resorts have good on piste conditions. Kaprun’s piste depth has also risen slightly and skiing is possible down to the Alpincenter.
It is still best to ski early in the morning as the skies have cleared and so the snow will soften.
Cloudy weather is expected over the weekend, which will bring a mixture of rain and snow to the resorts.
Canada
Banff (90/178cm) and Whistler (192cm) are the only two resorts open in Canada still that we feature.
At Whistler, skiing is only possible on Blackcomb Mountain now as Whistler Mountain has closed for the season. The snow is still good on Blackcomb Mountain but it is very hard in the morning and then soft in the afternoon.
Over at Banff recent snowfall and cold temperatures have left the snow in excellent condition.
Sunshine Village received 10cm of fresh snow on Tuesday which added to the already excellent pistes. It is a little hard off piste but the fresh snow has helped to improve things a little.
Chile
No new snow has fallen in Chile this week and the snow that fell the week before has now packed down nicely on the pistes.
The deepest snow base is reported in the Three Valleys at El Colorado (130/150cm) although La Parva (125cm) in the same ski domain also has plenty of snow with an average base depth of 125cm.
The connections between the three resorts were open on Thursday.
Portillo (105/135cm) also has plenty of snow and all of the area was open on Thursday with bright, sunny skies overhead.
Predominantly sunny weather is expected throughout the weekend at our featured Chilean resorts.
France
All of the summer pistes are open at Les Deux Alpes (180cm). This means that you can ski on four green runs, six blue runs and one black run.
There were some light clouds overheard on Thursday but this did not affect visibility. Tignes (180cm) and Val d’Isere (180cm) also experienced sunny conditions on Thursday.
The temperature is expected to drop a little over the weekend, which will help the conditions.
Italy
Good skiing is available on the Plateau Rosa glacier skiing area accessible from Cervinia (150cm) and Zermatt in Switzerland. There were five red runs and three blue runs available on Thursday.
Val Senales (200cm) had seven lifts open on Thursday, which was two more than they had open at the start of this week. Skiing is reported to be very good following 10cm of new snow arriving on Tuesday.
There are seven pistes open with bright, sunny weather.
The predominantly sunny weather at both ski areas is expected to last throughout Friday and thicker clouds are expected to move in over the weekend.
New Zealand
Fresh snow has fallen at all bar one of our featured New Zealand resorts this week and the sun came out on Thursday.
Cardrona (110cm) is the only resort not to report any new snow since last Friday.
With 40cm of new snow falling at Mount Dobson (130cm) on Sunday and a further 2cm landing on Tuesday the conditions are superb. All of the main trails have been groomed overnight and powder snow can be skied off the trails.
Mt Lyford (175cm) is in superb shape thanks to the recent snowfall. The average snow base has increased by 40cm since Monday and powder snow can be skied off the pistes.
The main trails have been groomed and terrain for all abilities was open on Thursday.
Porter Heights (120cm) reported 15cm of new snow on Tuesday and powder snow continued to be available on Thursday.
10cm of fresh snow fell at Mount Hutt (147cmn) on Tuesday to enhance riding conditions and more snow could fall on Sunday.
Mount Olympus (100cm) also received some fresh snow on Tuesday, although slightly less than fell at Mount Hutt. Both the Access Tow and Main Tow were open on Thursday with sunny skies overhear providing excellent visibility.
At Rainbow (42cm) only the learners’ lifts were open on Thursday as the resort was waiting for more snow to top up the upper mountain conditions.
On the North Island 10cm of new snow fell at Turoa (137cm) on Wednesday. The on piste snow is packed and groomed with windblown powder snow off the pistes.
The conditions at Whakapapa (76cm) have greatly improved following 17cm of new snow falling on the same day. The fresh snow is in great shape and The winds that affected Turoa have not been felt here.
The sunny conditions that New Zealand resorts experienced on Thursday is expected to last until the weekend, when thicker clouds will move in.
There is a good chance that the clouds will bring fresh snow, which is forecast to fall heaviest on the North Island.
North America
Rain affected Whistler (90cm) on Thursday but clearer conditions are expected from Friday.
Timberline (127cm) in Oregon, USA was closed for skiing on Wednesday but re-opened on Thursday.
The Magic Mile and Palmer lifts are open and if you want to practice your aerial manoeuvres then the Mile Canyon terrain park is open too.
Thundery conditions are expected this weekend.
Switzerland
5cm of new snow fell on the glacier at Saas Fee (305cm) on Wednesday which improved the skiing conditions.
The resort was open for snowsports on Thursday with nine lifts, four pistes and the snowpark available.
Zermatt (150cm) is in good shape despite not reporting any fresh snow and five red runs and three blue runs were open on Thursday.
There were sunny spells on Thursday at both resorts. Over the weekend thicker clouds are expected to move in.
