Kazakhstan freezes in prolonged cold spell
An area of high pressure has brought extreme low temperatures to parts of Kazakhstan and Russia.
Astana, Kazakhstan's capital, typically experiences winter high temperatures of -8C. Over the past week, the highest temperature reached here was just -23C, which is colder than the average domestic freezer. Parts of Russia have recorded overnight lows of -50C.
As the area of high pressure starts to move eastwards towards Mongolia and China, BBC Weather's Matt Taylor has the forecast.
