Record snow falls in Japan

17 January 2012 Last updated at 14:52 Help

Record snow arrived as the annual Sapporo Snow Festival got underway in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Over two metres of snow fell on Sunday into Monday, the most snow ever recorded in the city of Iwamizawa, just outside Sapporo.

Even Japan's famously efficient transport systems were badly disrupted with trains and buses being cancelled.

Laura Tobin has the story and looks at the forecast for Japan over the next few days.
