New cloud types named in 'cloud atlas'

23rd March 2017 Last updated at 17:48

Asperitas and volutus are amongst the new clouds added. The atlas itself dates back to the 19th century, and this is the first revision since 1987. It is available to view online, and also includes weather phenomena such as snow devils and rainbows.

But how do we identify different types of clouds - and what do they mean for the weather?

BBC Weather's Ben Rich explains.
