And now the Shipping Forecast issued by the Met Office, on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, at 0505 on Sunday 08 November 2009.

There are warnings of gales in Portland Plymouth Biscay Fitzroy Sole Lundy Fastnet and Shannon.

The general synopsis at midnight:
Lows england 992 and Fair Isle 995 both losing their identities by midnight tonight. New high expected scotland 1019 by same time.

The area forecasts for the next 24 hours:

Viking North Utsire South Utsire Forties:
Easterly or southeasterly 5 to 7, becoming variable 3 or 4 at times. slight or moderate in Forties, otherwise rough or very rough becoming moderate. Rain or showers. Moderate or good.

Cromarty Forth Tyne Dogger:
Variable 3 or 4. Slight, occasionally moderate except in Tyne. showers. Moderate or good.

Fisher:
Easterly or southeasterly 5 to 7, but variable 3 or 4 at times in west. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough in north. Rain or showers. Moderate or good.

German Bight Humber:
Variable 3 or 4, becoming east or southeast 5 at times. Slight occasionally moderate. Showers. Moderate or good.

Thames Dover Wight:
Cyclonic at first in Wight, otherwise south or southeast backing north or northeast, 5 to 7, decreasing 3 or 4 at times. Slight or moderate, occasionally rough at first in Wight. Showers, squally at first. moderate or good.

Portland Plymouth:
Northwest 6 to gale 8, veering northeast 3 or 4 later. In Portland rough or very rough becoming moderate, but in Plymouth very rough or high becoming moderate or rough. Showers, squally at first. Good, occasionally poor.

Biscay:
Northwest 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9 at first. High or very high becoming very rough or high. Squally showers. moderate or poor.

Fitzroy Sole Lundy Fastnet:
Northwest 6 to gale 8, veering north 4 or 5, becoming variable 3 or 4 at times later. Very rough or high, although very high at first in northeast Fitzroy, but in Lundy rough or very rough becoming moderate. rain or showers, squally at first. Moderate or poor, occasionally good.

Irish Sea:
North 5 to 7, veering east 3 later. Moderate at first in south, otherwise slight. Showers, squally at first in south. Moderate or good.

Shannon:
Northwest 6 to gale 8, decreasing 3 or 4, backing south 5 to 7 later. very rough or high becoming rough. Rain later. Good, occasionally poor.

Rockall Malin Hebrides Bailey:
Cyclonic or northwest 5 or 6, becoming variable 3 or 4 for a time, becoming southeast 5 to 7 later, perhaps gale 8 later in Rockall and Bailey. Rough or very rough becoming moderate or rough, but high at first in south Rockall. Showers, rain later in Rockall and Bailey. moderate or good, occasionally poor later.

Fair Isle Faeroes Southeast Iceland:
Easterly or cyclonic becoming southeasterly, 5 to 7, decreasing 3 or 4 at times, perhaps gale 8 later in Southeast Iceland. Rough or very rough becoming moderate or rough. Rain or showers. Good, occasionally poor.

This file is updated 4 times a day at or after approximately 0015, 0505, 1130 and 1725. It is read out on Radio 4 at 0048, 0520, 1201 and 1754 (local time). All broadcasts are on LW on 1515m (198 kHz) and some transmissions are on VHF. You can also listen using the link on our website. It gives a summary of gale warnings in force, a general synopsis and area forecasts for specified sea areas around the UK. The radio bulletin also includes the coastal weather reports (0048 and 0536 only) but these are not currently available on our site.

The music played before the Shipping Forecast is 'Sailing By' composed by Ronald Binge. Unfortunately, the version of 'Sailing By' we use is not available commercially. However, a similar recording, featuring the late Ronnie Aldrich on the piano, has been issued by: Seaward Records Ltd, Strathallan Castle, Port St Mary, Isle of Man.
