From Cape Wrath to Rattray Head including Orkney 24 hour forecast: Southwest backing southeast 3 or 4, occasionally 5. Moderate or rough, but mainly slight in Moray Firth. Mainly fair. Good, occasionally poor by night in southeast.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: Southeast veering southwest 4 or 5. Slight or moderate. Mainly fair. Good, occasionally poor by night in southeast.

Rattray Head to Berwick on Tweed 24 hour forecast: Variable 3 or less. Smooth or slight. Fair. Good, occasionally poor by night.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: Variable 3 or less. Smooth or slight. Mainly fair. Good, occasionally poor overnight.

Berwick on Tweed to Whitby 24 hour forecast: Variable 3 or less. Smooth or slight. Fair. Good, occasionally poor overnight.

Ardnamurchan Point to Cape Wrath including the Outer Hebrides - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: Southeasterly 3 or 4, increasing 5 or 6 around headlands and islands in southwest. Rough or very rough, decreasing moderate or rough. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: Southerly or southeasterly 4 or 5, occasionally 6 around headlands in west. Slight or moderate, but rough at first west of the Hebrides. Fair. Good.

The Minch 24 hour forecast: Southwesterly backing southeasterly 3 or 4, occasionally 5 in far southwest later. Slight or moderate, but rough south of skye at first. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

The Channel Islands - (SWW) 24 hour forecast: East 4 to 5, locally 6 in the west by evening. Slight to moderate, locally rather rough in the west later. Mist patches near coasts in the mornings isolated showers in the far north on Saturday. Moderate to good, locally poor.

Outlook for the following 24 hours: East to northeast 4 to 5, locally 6 at times. Slight in the southeast, moderate to rather rough in the northwest, with a low swell. Mist patches near coasts in the mornings showers in the north. Moderate to good, locally poor.

Shetland Isles 12 hour forecast: Variable 2 or 3, occasionally southeasterly 4 in the west later. Moderate or rough, occasionally very rough at first and occasionally slight later. Mainly fair. Moderate or good.

We publish a detailed Inshore Waters forecast for 19 areas around the coast of the UK twice a day, at 0500 and 1700.

18 areas, excluding Shetland, cover up to 12 miles offshore and consist of a 24 hour forecast followed by an outlook for the following 24 hours.

The forecast for Shetland covers up to 60 miles offshore and consists of a 12 hour forecast followed by an outlook for the following 12 hours.

The date and time of issue is given for each forecast.

The 19 area Inshore Waters forecast is broadcast on Radio 4 at approximately 0526 (local time).

A 24 hour forecast with only 9 areas is broadcast after the main shipping forecast at approximately 0053 (local time). This is updated with the issue of strong wind warnings. These are not broadcast on Radio 4 but via local radio and Coastguard stations.
