As soon as snow starts to fall, our first question is "Will it settle?"
If it does, our reactions normally depend on whether we have to go anywhere by road or public transport.
Whatever your reaction, nobody can deny the satisfaction of building the perfect snowman.
Best conditions for building a snowman
Beggars can't be choosers, so we are likely to try and build a snowman whatever the type of snow! However, these are signs of good 'snowman building conditions':
- Snow falling as large flakes
- Air temperature that is just below freezing
- The sort of snow that 'squeaks' when you walk on it
- Snowflakes that squeeze together without soaking your gloves - a sign that the snow crystals are 'locking together' by melting slightly and refreezing.
So if you come across these conditions, wrap-up well, grab your snowman's accessories and get building!.
When temperatures are nearer to freezing, the snow that falls is wetter. If there is no wind the flakes can be large (up to 7cm across) as they can be made of a large number of snow crystals.
