Peter Walker worked as a meteorological observer in charge at Whitworth Observatory, Manchester, a research assistant at Keele University and a Royal Navy met officer before joining the Met Office in 1963 as a forecaster based at Uxbridge. He started as a BBC TV forecaster from 1964 to June 1968.

Between 1968 and 1982 he was a lecturer in communication at Heriot Watt University. Later he transferred to presenting for ITV, appearing as a weatherman on Scottish Television (STV) from 1970 to 1981 and then on Anglia Television with fellow ex-BBC forecaster Jim Bacon from 1984 to 1993.
