He joined the Met Office in August 1970, and worked with the Meteorological Research Flight, based in Farnborough and later at the Fluid Dynamics Department at the Bracknell headquarters.

Between 1980 and 1985 John worked at the Nottingham Weather Centre, as a forecaster and television weatherman, making appearances on BBC Birmingham's Midlands Today, as well as Central TV. He joined BBC Television's national forecasting team, in London in September 1985 and he started broadcasting on national radio in 1986. He also appeared on BBC TV's Breakfast Time from 1986 to 1987, Breakfast News from 1990 to 1991 and 1993 to 2000.

He took over from Bert Foord as the weather team's horse racing tipster and also spent three years as the resident weather expert on BBC2's 'The Travel Show'. He appeared on many other shows ranging from 'Blankety Blank', 'Celebrity Telly Addicts' 'Through The Keyhole'. John and Ian McCaskill were given a make-over by the BBC Daytime Show 'Style Challenge' in October 1996.

In November 1988, the group "Tribe Of Toffs" released the "John Kettley Is A Weatherman" song, which spent five weeks in the British charts, peaking at No 21 on December 24 1988.

In the year 2000 John left the Met Office to set up his own commercial weather company, and continues to provide forecasts across a range of media outlets and sporting concerns. John lives in Hitchin, Hertfordshire with his wife Lynn and two sons, Charlie and George. He enjoys playing cricket, fell-walking, horse racing, photography and gardening.
