Ian McCaskill was born in Glasgow and educated at Queen's Park School, Glasgow and Glasgow University, where he studied science. National Service took him into the RAF and in 1959, he joined the Meteorological Corps as an Airman Meteorologist based firstly at Kinloss in Scotland, and later at RAF Akrotiri on the island of Cyprus. He left the RAF in 1961 to join the Met Office, being posted to Preswick Airport, Malta as well as to Manchester Weather Centre.
In 1978 he transferred to London Weather Centre and became a member of the BBC's forecasting team in October of that year. Apart from a break between 1983 and 1985 where he worked at Birmingham Airport and as a weatherman for Central Television, he stayed at the BBC until his retirement from the Met Office on 31 July 1998.
Ian, who lives near Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, is married to Pat and has two daughters. A Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, he lists travel and reading among his hobbies. He admits to being very fond of food, and has been a guest judge on BBC1's popular Masterchef competition. With his colleague John Kettley, Ian was given a make-over by the BBC daytime show Style Challenge in October 1996. He has made a number of other TV appearances since his retirement including GMTV in August 1999, Fit Club in 2003, and in a variety of adverts and interview programmes. He became the most imitated BBC TV weather forecaster with his very own Spitting Image puppet.
