Gail McGrane joined the Met Office as a trainee weather presenter during the summer of 1999. She began her training at the Met Office college in Reading, continuing at BBC Television Centre, London and then went on to successfully secure the post of Broadcast Meteorologist No.2 at BBC Scotland. For her the most recent leg of her weather career is a dream come true; having the chance to present weather and return to Scotland, although the 3am starts are taking their toll!
Gail was born in Dingwall, Ross-shire in 1975. She attended Dingwall Academy before going on to the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, where she gained an Honours degree in Geography and a Masters in Environmental Studies.
In the past her studies have taken her to the USA where she spent one year attending and working at the University of Iowa in the heart of the midwest: corn country! It was during this time her interest in weather was strengthened. Iowa experiences extremes of weather and sees many tornadoes each year. Having witnessed a tornado for herself and making a very scary car dash out of its path, Gail decided her career definitely lay in weather.
Gail was once a keen windsurfer, though admits she never quite got the hang of it but does like to try her hand at anything, especially if it is a short cut to getting fit. However, she does aspire to completing a marathon, though perhaps not this year! Gail recently married and some viewers may recognise her with her maiden name 'Pirie'.
