Location, location, location
Location, in the Cathedral city of Durham. Location, overlooking the river Wear; and location in a brand new, well designed, well appointed building, with luxurious seating in a spacious and airy auditorium.
I refer to the Gala Theatre in Durham, arguably the North Easts premier theatrical venue.
Film adaptation
I went to see the stage production of Noel Cowards Brief Encounter, my favourite movie in the whole world.
The bridges of Madison County is a close second. So I am finely tuned to quality in script, staging and delivery.
Superb in every way
I was not disappointed. The production was superb, faithful to Coward, David Lean (film director) and Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson.
But it was unique to that evening, in Durham, with Karen Drury and Richard Walsh outstanding as the ill fated lovers Laura and Alec.
Well directed
The supporting cast was faultless. Michael Lunney is to be applauded for his role as the semi-comatose Fred (Lauras husband) and his surefooted direction of the adaptation.
I heard every word, I enjoyed every word. I saw every move and nuance and enjoyed every move and nuance.
Better than the movie
I fell in love with Karen Drurys Laura. I, unlike Alec, would not have been able to leave her. She was fragrant, interesting and moved me.
I think this production comfortably lived up to the high standards set by the movie.
Enjoy the whole experience
You must see it and if you have the opportunity do have a meal before or after the show. There is no experience like it in the North East.
Well done Gala Theatre and the Middle Ground theatre company!
