Open
the doors to Shakespeare Hall on North Road in Durham on a Tuesday
evening and you could be forgiven for thinking there's a circus
in town.
Balls,
rings and clubs are being thrown into the air. There's a man on
a unicycle and another trying to balance a walking stick on his
chin. Over in the corner a man is balancing a woman in a handstand
on his feet. Welcome to the wonderful world of Durham City jugglers.

| Andy
juggling clubs |
Andy
Norwood has been juggling for 13 years, after someone bought him
a "how to juggle" book for Christmas.
He
comes to the Durham jugglers club because it's a good social group
and he's made a lot of friends there.
He goes to juggling conventions all over the country, where fellow
jugglers swap tricks and generally enjoy getting together. The Durham
jugglers convention usually takes place in October and last year
it attracted around 170 people.

| George
with a diabolo |
George
Kolovos demonstrated the diabolo, but he's also a master of the
rola bola or teeter board. He's been juggling and balancing for
about four years.
He
likes the creativity of working on new tricks, there are always
more to learn.

| Anwen
and Colin practising acrobalance |
Anwen
and Colin were practicing acrobalance, but they also juggle and
Colin started off unicycling. Acrobalance is something like gymnastics,
but more static. You need a great deal of trust in your partner
not to drop you as you move through a variety of lifts, holds and
balances. Anwen and Colin enjoy the physical and mental workout.

| Dr
John - so quick you can't see his hands move |
Dr
John is a scientist in Newcastle who juggles because "It's
got nothing to do with what I do at work".
He
was originally sponsored to learn to juggle, and is now hooked.
He can also stick nails up his nose!
