Places featuresYou are in: Wear > Places > Places features > Great North 10k in Sunderland ![]() The Great Women's Run - a great success Great North 10k in SunderlandIf the boys feel left out about not being able to run the Great Women's Run, well now is the time they can all put their money where their mouths are - with this new running event in Sunderland. The inaugural Bupa Great North 10k will take place at 09:00 on 12 July 2009 and will start and finish at the Stadium of Light. The route will take in the city centre, Wearmouth Bridge, the Winter Gardens, Mowbray Park and Roker beach. ![]() Could we see a similar picture in Sunderland? It replaces what was the very successful Great Women's Run which attracted thousands of runners from all over the world. The day will include a funfair at the Stadium of Light and a variety of food and drink will be available for all to enjoy. "Best athletes in the world"Reigning world marathon champion Luke Kibet will be taking part in the event, the 26-year-old Kenyan said: "I love competing at Great Run meetings particularly the 10 kilometre races which offer me the opportunity to improve my speed in preparations for the marathon." David Hart from Nova International said: "It's going to replace [the Great Women's Run], it's going to take place on 12 July, 10 weeks before the Great North Run. So anyone who is in training for the half marathon distance, to run 10k at that time of year will be perfect. "It's going to have all the ingredients, the best athletes in the world at the front of the field, it's going to be televised as well. "We hope we can make a big substantial statement and have another event the North East can be proud of." The television highlights are expected to be transmitted to over 100 countries.
