David Gross and his son

David Gross

David's an artist - and he likes to think big. As well as more traditional materials, he's made creations out of chain sawed wood, ice and snow.

David Gross information

I'm always a little apprehensive at this time of year. As a self employed artist I'm never sure if there will be enough work coming in over the next twelve months. So far it's looking promising.

Myself and two friends are travelling to the alps next week to build a four and a half metre high snow sculpture for an international competition.

Couldn't live without a chainsaw

This will be our fourth visit and each time we have taken lots of prizes but never won the big money prize. It's actually not lots of money, it's just the only prize that has money attached. We are a good team and it's about time we won.

I also hope to finish my kitchen, which has taken a year so far, and I would like to be able to spend more time at home with Angela and Seth.

What's the best thing about your job?

It's creative.

What's the worst thing about your job?

Trying to make really good quality fit a small budget.

What do you love/hate about where you live?

I love living by the sea. I like some of the ways that Seaham is changing. I hate it when people park their cars without trying to leave space for me to get past in our back street.

If you were making a time capsule what would you put in it?

A mortgage statement and a touch screen mobile phone with all the latest bells and whistles.

What couldn't you live without?

A chainsaw.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An artist or a nuclear physicist.

What do you think about your family?

I am the luckiest man in the world.

What was your first job?

Waiter in a sleazy night club.

What keeps you awake at night?

I sometimes have ideas for new sculptures that need some working out or I have too many projects on the go and I worry that I can't fit them all in.

Who would you most enjoy being stuck in a lift with?

Beethoven.

What are your bad habits?

Stubbornness, egotism, trying to do too much.

What are your good habits?

Stubbornness. Trying to do too much.

What's your proudest achievement?

Seth, our little boy.

Where do you go when you want to think/be alone?

I go to my studio - I spend more time there than anywhere else.

What are your ambitions?

To learn to manage my time and my accounts properly. To be debt free. To travel and not feel guilty about being away from home. To play the guitar properly. To have a house with a studio attached. To sell more sculptures. To spend more time with my family.

What's your worst memory?

Taking Seth to casualty with his first asthma attack.

What's your happiest memory?

Walking in the woods near Duns Castle with Angela and Seth.

What single change would improve your life most?

0% on credit card transactions for ever.

If you ruled the world what would you change?

I would try to get everyone to spend more time with others rather than communicating through a PC.
