About X-Ray

The X-Ray team Consumer rights champion X-Ray tackles the issues that really matter.
If there's one thing Rhodri Owen knows, it's that everyone's susceptible to a scam.Rhodri, the newest recruit to X-Ray has a wealth of experience in fighting for other people's rights, but that doesn't mean he's never been stitched up himself.

Rhodri, 32, (originally from Gower and married to ITV Wales newsreader Lucy Owen), is known for getting results for viewers on programmes including Hard Cash, 4 x 4 and CBBC's Short Change.

He's also recognised for his much-envied job as a presenter for ITV's Wish You Were Here. So it's good to hear that even Rhodri - a seasoned consumer champion with inside knowledge of the travel industry - can fall for one of the commonest scams of all, the disappointing holiday destination.

"I was once stung on a trip to Greece which looked great, but as it turned out the description was worded in such a way that we really didn't have a leg to stand on - it was the epitome of being caught hook, line and sinker. It said something about the accommodation being 30 metres from the beach, but it didn't mention that there was a big dual carriageway within that 30 metres!"

"I'd booked with a last minute holiday internet site, and I certainly won't have anything to do with them again. I'm a big believer in naming and shaming to make other people aware of bad practice."

"I've always been the sort of person who believes in standing up for your rights. I'm known among my friends for being very forthright in what I say when something's not right, and I don't take any flak."

"I believe that you get what you pay for, but if something's wrong you have every right to take it back and have your say. People work hard to earn their money and should be able to get what they expect when they spend it."
Rhodri's fellow bureaucracy-buster is Louise Elliott, 35, who is used to battling red tape from her time on BBC Wales' weekly investigative programme Week In Week Out. Louise, who grew up in Newport (her father was manager of Newport County Football Club) and Menai Bridge, has one series of X-Ray under her belt already and understands that people can be reluctant to stand up for their rights.
"Often people don't want to make a fuss and they don't want to be thought of as whingers," she says. "But it's not whingeing - it's about knowing your rights. Whether it's a teenager who's wrongly got a £5 mobile phone charge they shouldn't have to pay, or a widespread insurance scam worth big money, there's always action to take no matter how big or small the problem."The great thing about X-Ray is that you see those results - it's different from reporting on a story as a journalist, when there's often nothing you can actually do about it."
But, says Louise, people are increasingly aware that they don't have to put up with shoddy goods or services.
"I think people are quite clued up on their rights," she says. "Viewers who get in touch with us have often gone through exactly the right channels. People are quite savvy about their rights - often the reason they're not getting results is down to bureaucracy, and that's where we can help."
Here are some of Louise and Rhodri's top tips for getting results in a consumer stalemate situation.
  • Go straight to the top - "Unless you go to the top, other people in the chain of command may not care about you," says Rhodri.
  • Do a bit of homework - "Let people think you know your rights - that way you have the advantage," says Louise.
  • Check out the X-Ray website for the handy X-Guides which cover everything from online shopping to home improvements.
  • Keep all paperwork and receipts - "You don't have to file papers and receipts, as long as you keep them - just have a little box or drawer at home and chuck everything into it," says Rhodri.
  • Contact X-Ray - "People should get in touch even if they think it's a very small issue," says Louise. "If 20 other people have had the same bad experience, then it's important."
