Pond dipping

Trawl the water and see what you can find hiding beneath the surface

What you need:

  • A white tray
  • A net
  • A magnifying glass

1. Find a safe place to kneel down by a pond.

2. Fill your tray half full with pond water and place it on the ground next to you.

3. Sweep your fishing net back and forth three or four times close to the bottom of the pond.

4. Carefully empty what you've caught into your tray.

5. Look and see what you've caught. Use your magnifying glass to get a closer look.

Remember! Always put the contents of the tray back into the water and check nothing is stuck in the net.

  • Stonefly nymph
  • Mayfly nymph
  • Tadpole
  • Great Diving Beetle
  • Dragonfly nymph
