What you need:

  • An old sink or container such as a washing up bowl or baby bath.
  • Gravel/pebbles
  • Water plants/potted plants
  • Large stones

1. Fill your container about half full with gravel and pebbles. Remember to give them a good wash in clean water first.

2. Place the water plants among the gravel.

3. A floating plant such as water hyacinth, water chestnut or water lettuce is good.

4. Plants like water starwort or water violet are good too because they help put oxygen into the water.

5. Put large stones and potted plants around the container. This will provide cover for frogs, toads, newts and mini beasts.

6. Arrange some of the stones inside the container to act as steps in case an animal falls in by accident.

7. Slowly fill the container with water. If you can use rainwater, that's better. Keep topping up the mini pond with water - especially in summer!
