Trefor

The Trefor in Gwynedd is believed to have derived from Trevor Jones, manager of the quarry there in the 1850s. The village was formerly called Yr Hendre.

It grew as a result of the development of industry in the area and by 1880 the Welsh Granite Company had established a school there.

There is a Trefor in Anglesey and another near Llangollen.

The spelling as Trefor reflects a standardising of -v- as -f- and a perception that the village name is the same as other examples of Trefor which derive from tref (farmstead, hamlet, village, industrial settlement) and fawr (large).
