The lost world of the gentlemen of the road In 1964, Jim Phelan went on a journey through Wales to meet the gentlemen of the road. In those days, the tramps of spring and summer slept in barns, trimmed hedges, cleared garden rubbish, helped with haymaking; whatever else they faced, they were always their own boss. Even then, that kind of life was under threat: the outhouses where once they slept 'have become upgraded with modern conveniences'.
