The growth of the Rhondda Valley in the early 20th century At the turn of the last century, the incessant drive for coal production attracted thousands to the Rhondda Valley from all over Wales and beyond to work in the mines. Growth and immigration brought tensions; there were riots in Tonypandy in November 1910, when striking miners and their families, protesting against the closure of the Glamorgan Colliery, clashed with police. World War I gave the Rhondda its boom years. As coal production advanced, so the villages grew and with them came miners libraries, institutes and chapels - the centre of the communities' activities.
