1998
The character actor from the Rhondda Born in the Rhondda in 1928, a time of depression and poverty, Baker made his debut screen appearance at the age of 14 in a propoganda film called Undercover. It was the first of over 60 film performances. Zulu is probably his most famous; he was known for portraying rough, tough types. Off the screen he was a dedicated socialist, who made party political broadcasts for Harold Wilson's Labour. He was knighted not long before his death in 1976, and is buried on a Rhondda hillside.
