The quarries of North Wales Blaenau Ffestiniog, Bethesda and the Nantlle Valley were the stronghold of slate quarrying in North Wales. At the beginning of the 20th century, when Welsh roofing slate was considered the best in the world, 16,000 men worked in the quarries. They would get together in the caban (the canteen or meeting place) to discuss politics, religion or anything under the sun. Now unemployment is rife and the slate quarries have been turned into visitor centres for the tourists.
