Bridges over the Severn link - England and Wales The first Severn Bridge was opened by Queen Elizabeth on September 8th 1966. It replaced the ferry crossing from Aust Cliff to Beachley which had been in service for approximately forty years. It was hoped that this would entice industry into Wales.
On the 5th June 1996, thirty years after the opening of the first bridge, the second Severn crossing was opened by Prince Charles. A consortium from Britain and France were in charge of the construction and they, as a private company collected the tolls. It was expected that this bridge would bring further industry into Wales.
