The Depression, strikes and hunger marches in the Rhondda Valley of the 1920s and 30s After the boom in coal production of the 1914 to 1918 War, demand slumped drastically. In the valleys of South Wales, where two thirds of the population worked underground, the effect was devastating. The 1920s and 30s saw mass unemployment and its consequences: industrial strikes, hunger marches and the opening of soup kitchens as communities clung together to try and save themselves. But the effect of those years of hardship was inevitable, and thousands left the Rhondda to seek work elsewhere.
