The powerful actress who gained fame in the 1960s Rachel Thomas (1905 to 1995) is one of the best known and loved Welsh actresses. Born in Alltwen in the Swansea Valley her roots were very important to her. In 1933 the BBC invited her to read the lesson in a service from Minny Street, a chapel in Cardiff. Listeners demanded to know more about the owner of this voice. She starred with Paul Robeson in Proud Valley and in 1960 played Mam in the BBC television production of How Green Was My Valley. Her last screen role was as an old lady prepared to defend her farm with a shotgun in Whistling Boy.
