Richard Burton's mentor from his Port Talbot school days The man Richard Burton publicly thanked for his acting career was his English teacher at Port Talbot Secondary School. P H Burton (1904 to 1995) was mad about theatre, and when he recognised the powerful natural presence of the young Richard Jenkins, taught him how to project his voice and move on stage. The boy, who changed his name to honour his mentor, went on to an Oscar-winning career as one of the great heroic actors of his era.
