Aneurin Bevan, Minister of Health, at a press conference to review the first year of the NHS Aneurin Bevan (1892 to 1960) was a controversial figures in British politics. The son of a Tredegar coal miner, he himself started down the mines before eye problems prevented it. He went on to become Minister of Health. He was a controversial figure among colleagues: charming, eloquent, a first class debater in the House of Commons, but also rude and capable of great bluntness. Churchill, for instance, called him a 'merchant of discourtesy'. Now, his lasting legacy is remembered as the National Health Service.
