The celebrated painter of the North Wales landscape Kyffin Williams had no intention of becoming a painter. It was only during the war that he took up art as a therapy to soothe the brain, after being invalided out of the Royal Welch Fusiliers on account of epilepsy. In 1941 he entered the Slade School of Art in London where, according to the artist himself, he was the worst student present, with no facility for drawing - in one story, the drawing professor compared his nudes unfavourably with oak trees. Now Willliams is one of Wales' most celebrated artists, famous for his elemental paintings of the North Wales landscape.
