1983, 1979
The leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992 Born in Tredegar in 1942, Neil Kinnock became MP for Bedwellty at the age of 28. In his early days in the House of Commons he was known as something of a rebel on the back benches and in the 1979 campaign for devolution for Wales and Scotland, he went against the party line. Nonetheless, in 1983 he was elected leader of the Labour Party. While hailed as a future Prime Minister by some, by others he was considered a windbag and sometimes injudicious. After failing to overthrow the Tories in 1992, he served as a commissioner in the European Parliament.
