1980, 2002
Remembering the death of a boxing champion Johnny Owen was a great boxer and a shy man, a wiry figure who held the Welsh, British, Commonwealth and European bantamweight titles. Fight fans knew him as the Matchstick Man and the Bionic Bantam. In September 1980, in his fight to take the World Championship, he was floored by Lupe Pintor of Mexico and never regained consciousness. He died on 4 November 1980. Twenty years later, his father Richard travelled to Mexico City to meet Lupe Pintor and to bury the past. Together they unveiled a statue of Johnny in Merthyr on 2 November 2002.
