From Opportunity Knocks to the top of the charts Mary Hopkin was an overnight success. She was born in 1950 in Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley to Welsh-speaking parents. At 17, when she went from the chapel choir to the Hughie Green talent show, Opportunity Knocks, her song 'Turn, turn, turn' won 10 times in a row. A record contract with the Beatles' label, Apple, followed. And it was the Beatles' 'Hey Jude' which she knocked off the top spot when her song 'Those were the days' spent 21 weeks in the chart. In 1999 she toured with The Chieftains, but has no interest in returning to the limelight.
