Supertanker oil spill causes an ecological tragedy off Milford Haven In February 1996, the Liberian registered 147,000 tonne supertanker Sea Empress was on its way to deliver North Sea crude oil to the Texaco petrol refinery at Milford Haven when it ran aground. A huge oil-slick threatened the South Wales coast. Over 3,500 dead sea birds were washed on shore, and an equal number were found alive but covered in oil. The disaster was to have a devastating impact on the fishing industry. It cost £60 million to clean up the coastline.
